Competitor Spotlight
Liam Hattie is tactfully sharpening his skills as he prepares for the opportunity of a lifetime. This September, he will be traveling with Team Canada to Seoul, South Korea for the International Abilympics competition in the contest area of Studio Photography.
He’s arrived to this point after years of preparation. He has competed in the Nova Scotia Skills Competition for 3 years in a row; winning silver in 2009 and 2010, and then winning gold in Studio Photography this past April, 2011. As a full-time student in the Commercial Photography program at the NSCC Waterfront Campus, this was an accomplishment to celebrate.
As Liam was awarded the provincial gold medal, it was announced that he would also be traveling to Seoul, South Korea and competing on behalf of Canada at the International Abilympics.
He is now spending countless hours in the studio as he trains with his coach, Joe Robichaud – professional photographer and owner of Tanglewood Studios – preparing to compete for a world title in Studio Photography.
So what is the International Abilympics Competition? It’s a world-wide competition that showcases vocational skills of persons with disabilities in skilled trade and technology areas. For more detailed information click here.
“As a person challenged with a disability I’m very proud to make a stand for the millions of Canadians who ever thought less of themselves. For those who felt, or were told they couldn’t do something because they have a mental or physical barrier,” said Liam. “I’m excited to show my abilities and skills at an international level; challenge myself while taking in the overall positive experience.”
