International Abilympics
Five Nova Scotians represented Canada at the international skills competition for persons with disabilities in Seoul, South Korea.
The International Abilympics took place on September 25-30, featuring competitors from around the world in a variety of competitions to showcase the abilities of persons with disabilities. Nova Scotian competitors participated in areas including photography, poster design, cake decorating and painting.
The Abilympics Canada Association and Skills Canada Nova Scotia, a not-for-profit organization that promotes skilled trade and technology careers to youth, organized the trip with financial support from the province.
The four other Nova Scotian team members are: Liam Hattie, 29, Timberlea, competing in studio photography; PEI native Alexis Bulman, 20, who lives in Halifax, competing in painting; Kyla Johnson, 19, Millbrook, competing in outdoor photography; Samantha MacKenzie, 22, Sydney River, competing in poster design.

Coined after the term “Olympics of Abilities”, the International Abilympics (IA) is a world-wide competition that showcases vocational skills of persons with disabilities in skilled trade and technology areas.
In October, 2008 the newly formed Abilympics Canada Association (ACA) became a member of the International Abilympics Federation. In 2011, the Abilympics Canada Association, in partnership with the Nova Scotia Department of Labour and Advanced Education and Skills Canada – Nova Scotia, will be sending the first ever Abilympics Team Canada to Seoul, South Korea to compete in the International Abilympics. There will be 8 competitors from NS and NL, competing in areas including cake decorating, graphic design, and computer assembly.
