Provincial Technical Committee Profile
on Bonnie Williams
As a not-for-profit organization, Skills Canada – Nova Scotia relies on a wide variety of volunteers. One of our most dedicated volunteers is Bonnie Williams; she has been involved with Skills Canada – Nova Scotia as a member of the Provincial Technical Committee (PTC) and a coach for the Skills Canada National Competition (SCNC) for 7 years now.
She originally heard about the skills competition from a co-worker who was competing at the national level at the time and she knew immediately she wanted to get more involved. “Having competed in hair competitions in the past, I have seen what it has done for the development of my skills and my confidence. Also, I know the amount of recognition it brings towards my industry, which is just as important” says Williams.
She is currently a faculty member for NSCC’s cosmetology program at Burridge campus in Yarmouth where she works hard to help her students be the best they can be. Having been a member of the National Technical Committee and a judge in the past for various Skills events, Bonnie is in tune with what the expectations are for those who compete.
Throughout her time as a coach, she has helped students win medals at both the provincial and national levels. She remembers her first-ever national medalist who won on home soil at the SCNC when it was hosted in Halifax in 2006. “That was truly an amazing experience that I will never forget, seeing my student’s excitement when she won a medal was so gratifying.”
It is Bonnie’s passion for skill development that keeps her motivated to stay involved. She credits the skills competitions as an excellent means of preparing participants for their future careers. “Clients gravitate towards these types of professionals who have medals on the wall where they work,” says Bonnie, “The skills competition is also an excellent means of developing lifelong connections – whether it’s with other teammates, competitors from other provinces, industry representatives, or a coach.”
